The UK Government has analysed over 4,000 fire incidents between 2018 and 2024.
The data collected by the Ministry of Housing, Local Government and Fire Brigades have shown that over a 6 year period, premises protected by water mist fire suppression systems, controlled and extinguished fires at a higher rate than those protected by conventional sprinklers.
The headline numbers were as follows:
1) Water Mist systems controlled fires in 95.3% of cases, compared to 90.7% where sprinklers were used.
2) Water mist systems extinguished fires in 58.6% of cases compared to 27.6% where sprinklers were used.
It is worth noting that fire suppression systems are not typically used to extinguish fires, but rather to control and suppress them, however, the figures collected by the government show clearly that the effectiveness of water mist systems have a distinct advantage over sprinklers in extinguishing fires.
Fault rates for both systems were under 3%, and where the systems did not work it was most likely due to the area of fault being outside the protected areas, showing the importance for correct design, installation and maintenance when selecting any fire suppression system.
This data reinforces two things. The first is that fire suppression clearly can and does save people and property, and your business or home are far better of with it than without it. The second is that where a fire suppression system is fitted, water mist systems are more effective at controlling or extinguishing fires when compared to sprinklers, all while using up to 90% less water compared to sprinklers.
"This confirms what professionals already know, well designed suppression systems saves lives" is what the President of the International Water Mist Association Max Lakkonen said on these findings, along with "Water Mists edge in performance, combined with its low water useage, makes it a powerful fire safety solution".
